This week in class, we have focused on imaginary numbers. I started the section by giving a “mini lesson” on square roots. Then I put up the square root of negative nine and asked them what the answer was. Of course, the first thing several of them said was, “negative three!” So I replied with, “What is negative three times negative three?” They sat and scratched their heads. After a few more guesses and a little more time, I asked them was there any number that we could multiply to itself that would equal a negative? No because a negative times a negative is a positive and a positive times a positive is still a positive. This led us into the lesson. Here is the handout that I gave them and that we went over. This handout took the entire hour.

The following day, we did the “Find a Partner activity” with this activity that I posted in my Teachers Pay Teachers store. It’s $2.50, but well worth it! Students walk the room, finding a partner to work their problem. You can print it in color, but black and white is just as good. I laminate mine. It also comes with an answer sheet and recording sheet.
Here is a picture of a couple of my students engaged in the activity……

This is our homecoming week and testing for the PSAT, so our classes are a little crazy and sparse. I thought it was a good time to give them something relevant to what we were doing, but also fun to do. I made this “Potato Head” activity. It is a set of several pieces including ears, eyes, hats, hair, arms, shoes, etc….. Each piece has a problem on them. I chose to practice simplifying powers of i. My students LOVED this!! I have it on sale in my Teachers Pay Teachers store for $3.00. Well worth the price to see and hear your students enjoying your class. I also made one for reducing fractions, and am going to be making several more for other math skills.
