I know, I know…… the title is disgusting. Hey, I teach middle schoolers….. they like that kind of stuff. They loved the title, they loved the cute graphics, and they loved the activity. Did they like it because they love to do the math problems? Ummmm….not really. Did they love it because they got to get up and move around the room and work problems in a different format than just sitting at a desk with a boring worksheet? ABSOLUTELY!! This was a test review over a unit we had just finished. Here is how it all went down……..
I created some posters with problems on them……… (click on the picture to get the ones that I used for this activity over different fraction applications)
I laminated them………..
I stupidly printed the answer cards on regular paper, so I used address labels to cover up the answers from the backside. Next time it will be on cardstock……….
I put velcro squares on the front of the answer card………
and on the front of the poster………
I then used packaging tape to hang them in various places in my room…….
I had students title their math spiral notebooks with “Fraction Test Hillbilly Roadkill Hunt.” They all got a great laugh out of the title, and it made them even more excited. I told them that there were sixteen posters. They could answer them in any order. They had to write the question, show their work, and write the answer. After they found their answer, they would pull off the answer card to check their answer and then move on to the next poster. The students LOVED this in ALL of my classes!!!
Here is a pack that I put together for how I teach converting mixed numbers to improper fractions. This is one part of what I taught for this unit. It is for sale here on my blog or in my Teachers Pay Teachers store. It has detailed instructions, a fraction strip template, and this super fun game to play for reinforcement. It is for sale for only $3.
