Decimals…..one of my favorite things to teach. I know, I say that about a lot of stuff. Every time a song comes on the radio, I always say “This is my favorite song!” My kids then say, “Mom, you say every song is your favorite.” Well, I guess I’m kind of like that with math. Every year I teach, I get better and better activities, games, or resources for the different things I teach. I love my job and I love math. When I first started teaching, I needed direction on exactly how to teach different things. I already knew the material, and by the time I was teaching, I couldn’t remember how I was taught it. Not to mention the fact that learning now is not the same as learning was when I was in school. Anyway, I thought I would sit down and make a unit over exactly how I teach decimals. Now the activities and reinforcement games may change from year to year, but the lesson itself is very effective.
What is the main buzzword in education right now? That’s right….Common Core. The way I understand it, common core focuses on the depth of knowledge students have on concepts. I’m super fine with that! I completely agree with that and I love teaching deep understanding of math concepts and not just the rote “plug-and-chug” mathematics our current Oklahoma PASS focuses on. This unit I made on decimals teaches to that deep understanding.
