As I said in an the last post, I’m trying to come up with ideas to help review my students for the many different skills they will be tested on here in a couple of weeks. One of the skills that is very important for both the test, as well as a much needed concept for future years also is FRACTIONS. Fractions always seems to be difficult for several students every year. Back when I taught multiplying and dividing fractions at the first of the year, I thought about dominoes. I’m sure this isn’t a new concept for a lot of teachers, but I thought it was genius. When I thought about the dominoes, I had already spent a bunch of money on sets of dice and other things, plus I didn’t have enough time for them to come in before I was going to need them.
Because of all of this, I figured that I would just make dice. They aren’t going to be “as good” as the real thing, but they will be much cheaper and easily available. The activities that could go along with dominoes are endless. I put together four different worksheets that will guide students through the activity. One worksheet for multiplying, one for dividing, and one for adding fractions. These worksheets are designed for students to work in pairs. They use the dominoes to form two fractions, then use the operation given, and then an added bonus is that it has them compare the numbers. I am all about activities that use more than one skill at a time. A fourth worksheet guides students (either in pairs or individually) to use the dominoes to form fractions and then order them from least to greatest.
Update::: There are now three ways to buy this great activity!! It is on my Teachers Pay Teachers store, on the FTLOTM Store page here on the blog, or you can click the “Buy Now” button located below to purchase.
