Yesterday we learned that unfortunately……. there is no song that will help us with subtracting integers. Fortunately however, we can manipulate our problem to make it an addition problem allowing us to use the song. We learned that we need to change that subtraction sign into an addition, but like with everything else we’ve done in math….if we change one thing, we have to change something else. If we change the subtraction sign to an addition sign, we have to change the sign of the following integer. Hence the term, “add the opposite.” The students were shown several examples as well as worked several problems themselves. Everyone felt very confident and were given a worksheet that was finished impressively quick.
Today we graded yesterday’s assignment, all students were given the opportunity to work problems on the board, and were given another practice worksheet. The only questions came from word problems dealing with figuring the balance of a checking account.
Tomorrow should be a fun-filled day with a couple of exciting activities. I’ll explain more about those tomorrow!
