Friday I finally taught my classes “THE” song. The “adding integers” song that is. It’s sung to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and has these words……..Same signs add and keep, Different signs subtract, Take the sign of the higher number, Then it’ll be exact. After much hype and enthusiasm, most all students seemed to enjoy it. Of course you always have those couple of students who aren’t up to anything fun. I think for the most part it was a success. I will try to put the link on here to our Mid-Del website so that you can view one of my classes performing it. They were the best performers this year. Today, they played the game Greatest, Least, and Absolute Value. They are in groups of three or four and use playing cards similar to the game of War. Ace is one, jack is 11, queen is 12, and king is 13, reds are negatives, and blacks are positive. Each person turns over two cards and states what the sum of their cards are. For rounds 1-3 they are looking for the greatest value, for rounds 4-6 they are looking for the person with the least value, and 7-9 is the person with the highest absolute value. The first place person in each round gets 5 pts, the second place person in each round gets 3 pts, and everyone else gets 1 pt. This allows the students to order the integers as well. After playing the game, the students were given a worksheet called “Mountains Up and Down” which required them to work a few adding integer problems. Overall, a very successful day.
